"Starting secondary schooling can be a time of anxiousness and stress for both children and their parents. At Thomas More College we offer many opportunities for beginning students to come in, take a look around, meet with their teachers and other students and become acquainted with their new school."
Students beginning in Year 8 are invited to attend a number of events which are designed to make them feel comfortable and help them ease their way into their new surroundings. Before they even arrive at Thomas More College our Year 8 Coordinator visits local Primary Schools with small groups of our current students to meet with Year 7 classes. During these visits our Year 8's talk about their experiences starting High School and answer questions.
Early in November each year we invite the parents of our new students, who will begin the next year, to a meeting. We encourage the whole family to attend these meetings as the information provided helps everyone plan for the big event. In late November all Year 7 students enrolled at Thomas More College are invited to an Orientation Day. During this day the students spend time with current Year 8's, are taken on tours of the school, visiting all of the subject areas and participating in activities. This is a time for the children to meet each other and begin forming friendships which they can then pick up again at the beginning of the school year.
