Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for all at Thomas More College

The Margaret More Centre functions as a specialised learning resource space- it is not a closed unit. It provides students with flexibility to access teaching and learning programs to support learning progress in smaller classes, with more tailored approaches to learning activities.

Students may have time in an MMC class as part of their learning program if:

the student is unable to access the learning outcomes and content consistent with their age and educational stage; and
education cannot be provided in a mainstream classroom with reasonable adjustments; and
the student and the student's parents have been consulted and they have consented.

Structure

Year 7 & 8 - English, Maths, Science, HASS, Life Skills - MMC

Year 9 - English, Maths, Science, HASS - MMC

Year 10 - English, Maths, Science, History, Career Education- MMC

Year 11 and 12 - Depending on student need and aspirations, some subjects may be offered through the MMC. Alternatively, students may access Modified SACE subjects in classes with their same-aged peers.

Pathways and Transitions

Starting in Year 9, students will begin to access opportunities to think about future pathways they would like to take. TMC works on collaboration with a range of organisations to support students with disability to access further study, training and employment.

During the seniors years, all students will have the opportunity to engage in industry immersion activities, work experience, career counselling, and short courses to support their graduate readiness.

At TMC, our approaches to inclusive learning for all students are derived from the Guiding Principles and the six interdependent Strands of the SACCS Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy

Our Motivation for full inclusion:

Inspired by the gospel, Catholic Social Teaching and Tradition demand that institutions like Catholic schools serve the people most in need (Matthew 25:31-46; Catechism of the Catholic Church, no 2447-2448; Octogesima Adveniens).

This demand means inclusive education must be at the heart of every CESA school. This Strategy activates our gospel-based motivation as it applies to students with disability. As Pope Francis said, “An inclusive education finds a place for all” (Address to the Association of Catholic School Parents, 2015)

As part of our commitment to ensuring all learners can access their learning entitlement, Thomas More College maintains a supported area of learning known as the Margaret More Centre (MMC). The MMC provides a level of specialisation to assist in meeting the more complex needs of some students with disabilities, particularly cognitive disabilities, that may have a significant functional impact on learning.
